Artist statement
With a successful career as a TV commercial director/cinematographer behind me, I am thrilled to now be light and agile with a still camera. Water has a wild imagination; it bends light, warps bodies, and turns botanicals into painterly watercolors that wrap models in kaleidoscopes of color. The surprises in everything water touches serve as the canvas for my images. My new series, Bodies and Botanicals, is the wildly entangled result.
My photography celebrates my love for botanicals, dance, and the ocean. Dance has been a lifelong passion, along with gardens, tactile textures, and design. So much so that after my degree from Art Center College of Design, I studied Landscape Architecture. I make my home in Laguna Beach, CA, and Baja, Mexico, where the ocean is front and center in my life. On the beach with my dog or boogie boarding, the ocean is a part of most every day.
Bodies and Botanicals was shot in Mexico, Spain, and the US, with me shooting at the water’s edge. The plant ‘models’ are willing participants, always awaiting their close-up. Every neighbor’s yard, park, or nursery holds endless possibilities! The models are friends and acquaintances: a former bodybuilder, a mother of 3, a 67-year-old philanthropist, a high-powered lawyer...and the list goes on. My images are about freedom, openness, and the infinite world available to us. I invite you to jump in and find your own joy and relationship to each finished piece.
